How to Cure Your Hangover
A few drinks here and there usually doesn’t cause a hangover. However, if you go to the bar for happy hour and don’t leave until well after midnight or you attend a fabulous party on the beach, it’s understandable if you end up drinking a little too much. In fact, even just two or three drinks for some people is enough to result in a hangover the next day. That being said, nobody likes the feeling groggy, nauseous, or weak the day after drinking, so in today’s post, we will provide you with a few tips on how you can cure your hangover.

The Day Before
If you have plans to get together with friends and have a few drinks or attend a party in advance, the best thing you can do for your future self is prepare for a night of drinking. Preparing your body ahead of time will make it easier for your body to handle the alcohol, and it may even make your hangover the next day a little more bearable, if not nonexistent.
Eat Enough Food
At some point in your life, you may have accidentally had too much to drink on an empty stomach. When you don’t have anything in your stomach, alcohol is absorbed into your system much faster than it would be if you had eaten a big meal. As a result, less drinks make you feel more intoxicated at a quicker rate, which can lead to more alcohol in your system and a bigger hangover the next day. Instead, it’s better to make sure you’re eating enough throughout the day if you plan to drink later at night. Consider ordering food with your happy hour cocktails or plan to have a big dinner with protein and carbs before you attend a party.
Drink Water
In addition to eating enough food before you start drinking, you should also consider drinking more water both before and while you are consuming alcohol. A good rule of thumb is to consume one glass of water with every alcoholic beverage to ensure that your body is staying hydrated, as hydration can lead to hangover symptoms such as fatigue and headaches.
The Day Of
Everyone knows the feeling of waking up the morning after drinking and feeling a little worse for wear. As much as you might prepare the day before a hangover, or how much water you might drink alongside your alcoholic beverages, there are times where a hangover is just inevitable, but we’ve prepared a few tips that might help you combat the symptoms.
Hair of the Dog
After a long night of drinking, there’s a good chance someone has told you that you need a hair of the dog to feel better — aka you should have another drink. While having another sip of alcohol may be the last thing you want to do, there is some scientific proof that having a little alcohol can help alleviate hangover symptoms.
Methanol is a chemical compound found in alcohol, and when it’s consumed, it can start to convert into formaldehyde, which can cause your hangover symptoms. However, when you take another drink of alcohol, the ethanol — also found in alcohol — can stop the conversion and help eliminate the methanol and prevent it from forming into formaldehyde. That being said, using a hair of the dog should be a last resort, as relying on alcohol to cure your hangover can lead to a dependence on alcohol.
Stock Up on Carbohydrates
One of the big reasons you may experience a hangover is because alcohol can lower your blood sugar levels, which is your brain’s main source of food. In order to replenish your blood sugar, it’s recommended that your diet is heavy with carbohydrates after a night of drinking. Consider eating some toast and drinking some juice, or if you’re feeling up to it, think about ordering a large pancake from your favorite breakfast place!
